Grain stocks in Ukraine on March 1 totaled 12.8 million metric tons, a fall of 21% on the year, the state statistics committee said Tuesday. The grain stocks included 5.8 million tons of wheat, 3.1 million tons of barley, 2.4 million tons of corn and 600,000 tons of rye.
Cold weather is preventing Ukrainian farmers from planting spring grains, which may lead to a reduction in the barley-planted area and an increase in the areas planted with corn and sunflower, the UkrAgroConsult market analyst said Tuesday.
As of March 11 of the current year, ice over occupied nearly 0.77 mln ha of winter grain sowings in Ukraine, or 9.1% of winter crops sowings, informed the press-cutting service of Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine.
Ukraine exported 16.557 million metric tons of grain between the beginning of the current marketing year July 1, 2009 and March 2 this year compared with 16.307 million tons in the corresponding period in the previous marketing year, the Agriculture Ministry reported Friday.
There have been long delays in exports of wheat from Black Sea ports due to heavy snow and cold weather in the growing regions and this is preventing any further fall in prices despite ample supplies, trading executives said Wednesday.
“Shipments scheduled for January spilled over to February and those for this month into March,” said an exporter based in Ukraine.
According to the data of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, as of January 29, 2010, trading volumes of grains of the harvest-2009 on the exchange market of Ukraine totaled 16.41 mln tonnes, including 6.85 mln tonnes on spot contract terms, and 9.55 mln tonnes on forward terms.
From the beginning of the current marketing year (MY, July 2009/June 2010), Ukraine exported nearly 16 mln tonnes of grains, declared Ivan Demchak, the Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy, on February 3.
Ukraine exported in July-December, the first six months of the current marketing year, 6.9 million metric tons of wheat, 4% more than in the corresponding period in the previous marketing year, the agriculture ministry reported Monday.
In 2009, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (Ukraine) produced 94.9 thsd tonnes of rice, an increase of 55.1% compared to 2008, declared the Main statistics department of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
Exporters in Ukraine have sold several hundred containers of feed wheat to Vietnamese buyers at a price of $230 per ton, basis cost and freight, a trading executive involved in the deal said Wednesday.
