Cold weather is preventing Ukrainian farmers from planting spring grains, which may lead to a reduction in the barley-planted area and an increase in the areas planted with corn and sunflower, the UkrAgroConsult market analyst said Tuesday.
UkrAgroConsult said that even in southern regions of Ukraine air temperatures were below freezing at night. Farmers in the Crimea peninsula had begun preparing the soil for planting, but the planting hasn’t begun.
On the same date last year Ukraine had planted spring grains on 200,000 hectares and on the same date in 2008 400,000 hectares had been planted.
