Ukraine: 9% of winter crops sowings face ice covering

As of March 11 of the current year, ice over occupied nearly 0.77 mln ha of winter grain sowings in Ukraine, or 9.1% of winter crops sowings, informed the press-cutting service of Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine.

According to the announcement, winter grains perished throughout 1.6% of the planned sowing areas or 0.14 mln ha. Winter grains sowings in Ukraine showed weak and thinned condition throughout the area of 1.1 mln ha (13.5%).

At the same time, winter grains sowings in Ukraine showed good and satisfactory conditions throughout 86.5% of the general sowing areas, or 7.3 mln ha.

36% of winter rapeseed sowings showed good condition, satisfactory condition – 41.6%, weak and thinned condition – 22.4%, including rapeseed sowings under ice cover – 9.4%. The general rapeseed sowing areas totaled nearly 1.4 mln ha.

As a reminder, according to data of the State Committee of Statistics of Ukraine, agrarians sowed winter crops (including rapeseed) throughout 10.1 mln ha, an increase of 3% compared to 2008 index.
