China’s government said Tuesday it plans to attain grain production capacity of 500 million metric tons in 2010, raising it to 530 million metric tons in 2015 and 550 million metric tons or higher in 2020.
India may import a total of two million metric tons of rice over the next 12 months in phases to meet a possible shortfall after a drought. The imports will start only if a senior group of ministers approves the proposal, put forth by the food ministry, at a meeting scheduled Nov. 12, according to a food ministry document seen by Dow Jones Newswires Tuesday.

World wheat prices are expected to double in the next three decades, with an increase of up to 20% in the next decade, Joachim von Braun, director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute, told Dow Jones Newswires Monday. Speaking on the sidelines of a Food Security conference in London, von Braun said wheat is the most “troubled” grain crop going forward due to an expected increased incidence of disease combined with a lack of yield increases.
Russia Monday began grain intervention purchases, the agriculture ministry said. Trading is being carried out by state-owned United Grain Company. The first trading session resulted in the purchase of 5,400 metric tons of wheat from a farmer at RUB3,300 ($113.6) a ton, which is considered to be a good market price, the ministry said.
Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation forecasts the volumes of general grain production in Ukraine in 2009 at the level of over 47 mln tonnes, including over 10 mln tonnes of maize. Even the rates of grain exports exceeds the previous year export volumes, when grain harvest totaled 53 mln tonnes, declared Sergey Stoyanov, the general director of the organization.
During January-September of 2009, enterprises of the chemical industry of Ukraine decreased production volumes of nitrogenous and mineral fertilizers by 24.4% compared to the same period of the previous year – to 1.6 mln tonnes, declared the State Committee of Statistics of Ukraine.
The world autumn demand in fertilizers stimulates Ukrainian producers to increase capacity utilization and provides hope for successfully completion of the season. At the same time, prices for chemical industry production continue rising.
According to the world experts, the volumes of the world trading with grains on the world market will possibly lower by 11% due to the essential surplus of supply over demand. High harvest of grains in the countries of the North Africa and the Middle East also assisted to the development of the situation. However, the world market still expects for the results of wheat harvests in the countries of the Southern Hemisphere, including grain quality in Australia, reduction of grain production volumes in Argentina, due to the decrease of sowing areas and yield indices.
