In Ukraine, the area of spring wheat sowing has increased. According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, as of mid-May, 247,000 hectares of crops have already been sown in the country. It is predicted that this indicator will reach 285 thousand ha.
The last time in Ukraine, during the spring sowing, similar areas of wheat were sown 12 years ago. For example, in 2013, before the start of Russia's war against Ukraine and the temporary occupation of part of our territories, this figure was 160.2 thousand hectares. In 2021, Ukrainian farmers sowed 192.1 thousand hectares of spring wheat.
Currently, Dnipropetrovsk region is the leader in sowing this crop, where farmers have already sown 32.1 thousand hectares. Last year, the most was sown in Ternopil region - 22.4 thousand hectares, and in 2021 in Zhytomyr region - 21.8 thousand hectares.
However, despite the increased areas of spring wheat sowing, their share is only 10% of the total area of production of this crop in Ukraine. Therefore, such an increase does not significantly compensate for the overall reduction of wheat sowing areas in the new season.
According to preliminary forecasts of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, this year the harvest of grain and leguminous crops will amount to 45 million tons, of which more than 16.5 million tons will be wheat. The US Department of Agriculture set the same indicator for the wheat harvest in Ukraine in its first agricultural forecast for the new 23/24 marketing season.
