Ukraine planted spring grains on 3.72 million hectares, or 51% of the planned total area, to April 16, the agriculture ministry reported Monday.
The ministry didn't give comparative year-earlier figures, but it said earlier that spring grains were planted on 4.38 million hectares to April 12, 2009.
To date spring wheat was planted on 257,000 hectares, or 86% of the planned total area. Spring barley was planted on 2.82 million hectares, or 86% of the planned total area. Spring oats were planted on 271,000 hectares, or 70% of the planned total planted area. Spring pulses were planted on 289,000 hectares, or 99% of the planned total planted area.
Ukraine also began planting spring corn, with 37,500 hectares, or 1%, of the planned total area being planted to date.
Beet was planted to date on 263,000 hectares, or 63%, of the planned total planted area, and sunflower was planted on 235,000 hectares, or 6%, of the total planned planted area.
