On May 2, 2023, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law terminating the agreement between the government of Ukraine and the government of the Syrian Arab Republic on trade, economic and technical cooperation.

This was reported by the press service of the parliament.

"The agreement between the government of Ukraine and the government of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) on trade, economic and technical cooperation and to bring the contractual and legal framework of Ukraine to the modern realities of international relations, taking into account the loss of its relevance, is terminated by law," the message says.

The document is aimed at protecting national interests in connection with the breakdown of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the SAR and its support of the Russian military and political leadership regarding the military invasion of the territory of Ukraine, as well as the recognition of the so-called "independence" of the temporarily occupied territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine.

In the summer of 2022, Ukraine severed diplomatic relations with the Syrian Arab Republic and introduced a trade embargo in connection with this country's recognition of the "independence" of the "dpr" and "lpr".
