Spain will allocate EUR 4.4 million to the Grain from Ukraine initiative together with the World Food Program.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said this at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Thursday, February 23.

"I supported President Zelensky's Grain from Ukraine initiative to reach those in need. We welcomed our contribution of EUR 4.4 million that Spain will devote to it together with the World Food Program," Sanchez said.

He also supported Zelensky's peace formula and said that Spain was looking forward to its implementation.

Sanchez added that in view of its upcoming presidency of the European Union in the second half of this year, Spain is ready to support and accompany Ukraine in the process of realizing its legitimate aspirations to become a member of the EU. In this context, he welcomed the reforms adopted and implemented by the Government of Ukraine, which are monitored by the European Commission.

The Grain from Ukraine program was initiated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It envisages the purchase of Ukrainian grain by partner countries and its transfer to states suffering from a humanitarian crisis. The program is implemented in partnership with the World Food Program under the auspices of the United Nations.

More than 40 countries have already joined the program. In total, they provided $200 million for its financing. As part of Grain from Ukraine, 110,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat have already been delivered to one of the most socially vulnerable countries in Africa - Ethiopia and Somalia.
