Export potential and condition of the organic sector of Ukraine during the full-scale invasion

Organic exports, especially to the EU, have improved during the full-scale war. Facing problems with logistics, in August 2022, an agreement on unblocking Ukrainian sea ports came into force. Overall, organic exports to Europe (the EU, Norway, Switzerland) in 2022 exceeded exports in 2021 by 15.2%.

Despite the full-scale war, Ukrainian organic producers launched new value-added organic products in 2022. These included fruit rolls, different types of instant porridge and cream soups, nectarine juice and essential oils.

91% of organic operators continue organic production and processing fully or partially, or their production and processing were resumed or planned to during the full-scale war. Most organic producers plan on continuing organic production and not switching to conventional production.

Organic production and export development are among the priorities for Ukraine. In 2021, the Ukrainian Government adopted the National Economic Strategy 2030 which officially set a target for increase of organic land in Ukraine. It is planned that by 2030 Ukrainian organic land will reach 3% of the total area of the Ukrainian agricultural lands (or near 1.3 million hectares). Another goal of the Strategy is to increase exports of organic products up to $1 billion by 2030. The government of Ukraine is aiming to increase processing capacity and develop sectors with high added value by attracting foreign and domestic investment, starting already now, not waiting for the war to be over.
