The European Parliament’s Plenary vote on the EU Methane Strategy took place. The strategy, which is of the upmost importance for the agricultural sector, calls for the reduction of methane emissions as part of the measures to combat climate change.
Copa and Cogeca welcome the Parliament’s call for a cross-sectorial approach to methane emission reduction and mitigation in line with the Paris Agreement that pays attention to economic and social sustainability. In this regard, we support the revision of EU climate and environmental legislation in a coherent manner, preceded by necessary cumulative impact assessments, as called for by the Parliament. This includes the development of a regulatory framework for the certification of carbon removals on the basis of robust and transparent carbon accounting that takes into account the differences between GHG emissions and rewards farmers for their mitigation efforts.
