The customs duties on grain exports present a serious risk to the economy of the country and the balance of payments, declared Petr Poroshenko, Head of the Council of the National Bank of Ukraine, on October 5.

P.Poroshenko stressed that to date the current account deficit and the risk of deficit of the balance of payments are the key risks for the country.

Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk has expressed hope that a moratorium on sale and purchase of farmland would be cancelled from January 1,2011. "I'd be glad if free trade is introduced from January 1,2011. According to data of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, 7.1 mln ha of winter grain sowings from the general areas of 8 mln ha show good and satisfactory condition, or 89.6% of the general winter grain sowing areas. 0.8 mln ha (10.4%) are estimated as weak and thinned, nearly 600 thsd ha (7%) of winter grain sowing areas perished, declared the press-cutting service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy on April 29.

Grain traders in Ukraine have to reduce purchase prices UAH 200-250 (USD 1/UAH 7.925) due to the huge VAT debts owed them by the government of Ukraine for months, Leonid Kozachenko, president of the Ukrainian Agricultural Confederation (UAC) stated on Monday.

"Agriculture's share of Ukraine's exports has reached 25% and at the same time 56% of total VAT debts have not been returned to us in cash by the government. No single business sector should receive payment for debts in the form of commodities - by grain, spare parts, garments, metallurgists and chemists have no such possibility. It is distortion of a process of the debt return," Kozachenko noted.
